What sealants do
Sealants are thin, protective coatings painted into the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Those grooves are where decay tends to start because food and bacteria get trapped where a toothbrush cannot reach. The sealant smooths the surface and seals it off. We most often place sealants on children’s and teenagers’ permanent molars, but they work for adults too.
What fluoride does
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps it resist the acid that causes decay. We apply professional-strength fluoride at the end of cleanings for patients who would benefit kids, patients with a history of cavities, patients with exposed roots from gum recession, and anyone whose home water supply is low in fluoride. It takes a couple of minutes and works.
Who actually benefits from these
For some patients, fluoride and sealants are clearly worth doing. For others, they are not necessary. We will look at your cavity history, your home routine, your risk factors, and tell you honestly whether either treatment will move the needle for you. We do not push preventive care that does not change outcomes.

The sealant material flows into the grooves, hardens, and creates a smooth, protective barrier. Does fluoride or sealant placement hurt?
No. Both treatments are painless. Sealant placement involves a quick cleaning of the tooth, a brief application of the sealant material, and a curing light to harden it. Fluoride is applied as a varnish or in a tray for a few minutes. Neither requires numbing and most patients are surprised at how fast it goes.
How long does it take?
Sealants take only a few minutes per tooth. Fluoride application adds about five minutes to the end of a cleaning. Both can be done at the same visit as your regular checkup. If you have multiple teeth that need sealants, we may schedule a slightly longer visit.

How long do dental sealants last?
Sealants typically last five to ten years and we check them at every cleaning. If a sealant chips, wears, or comes off, we can usually replace it quickly. Sealants do not last forever, but they are inexpensive to maintain compared to filling a cavity.
Is fluoride safe?
Professional fluoride applications use carefully controlled concentrations and are well-studied. We apply fluoride based on your specific risk factors — not as a blanket recommendation for every patient. If you have concerns, we are happy to talk through them.
Do you offer fluoride and sealants for adults?
Yes. While these treatments are most commonly associated with pediatric care, they have value for adults with high cavity risk, exposed roots, or specific anatomy. We will tell you honestly whether either treatment is likely to help your specific situation.
